The St. Petersburg Mussorgsky State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre occupies a special place in the cultural life of the city. Originally, the theatre was conceived as an experimental theatre, a 'laboratory of Soviet opera'. Now it is noted for classic stagings of ballet and opera. Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Aida and La Traviata make up the main part of the theatre repertoire.
